Jesse Powell was an American singer-songwriter of soul and R&B music. Louil Silas Jr. founded Powell’s biggest hit, “You,” which peaked at No. 2 on the R&B charts and No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Powell released four albums and was the older brother of contemporary R&B singers Tamara and Trina.

Powell was raised with his brother and three sisters in Gary, Indiana, where he was born. Participating in local talent shows, the family gained the attention of Kansas City producer Carl Roland in 1993. Louil Silas signed him to his Silas Records company after witnessing him perform.
Three years later, he completed his debut record. “All I Need,” Powell, Sam Salter, and Laney Stewart penned the song. The record peaked at #15 on the R&B chart and #63 on the Billboard 200, according to the RIAA, which certified it gold.
Powell’s debut release on the MCA Records label, “If I,” peaked at No. 58 on the R&B chart in 2000, following the label’s acquisition of Silas Records. His third studio record, JP, was released on March 27, 2001.
Launching at #71 on the Billboard 200, it debuted at #18 on the R&B chart. By promoting the second song, “Something in the Past,” which peaked at #67 on the R&B charts, Powell further assisted in spreading the word about the release.
He departed the label in 2002 and signed with Riviera Records. Released on October 14, 2003, Jesse, his fourth studio album, was preceded by the singles “By the Way” (ranked #99 R&B) and “Touching It Tonight” (ranked #85 R&B).
